WHO outlines the criteria for the effectiveness of the vaccine against COVID-19

The effectiveness of the coronavirus vaccine will be considered satisfactory if the drug will give the desired result in 50% of cases within a few months. Such a statement was made on September 21 by Sumiya Swaminathan, Chief Scientist of the World Health Organization (WHO).

The minimum threshold, according to her, the organization considers an indicator of 30%. But such drugs will not be able to positively affect the health of society. WHO guidelines describe a vaccine with an efficacy of 70% or better.

“But, of course, 50% would be expected so that we would classify the vaccine as effective,” RIA Novosti quoted Swaminathan as saying.

In addition, WHO will consider the safety of the drug. It will be appreciated by observing patients for several months after vaccination.

The US government recently promised that the vaccine would be “virtually free” for Americans. They intend to release it into civilian circulation “as soon as possible.”
