An immunologist explained whether seasonal colds generate protection against new coronavirus. Previously, scientists from the United States, Germany, and Israel found out that people who have never had COVID-19 have immune cells against some parts of coronavirus. In one of the studies they examined blood samples collected from 2015 to 2018.

It turned out that 50% of participants who were not infected with COVID-19 have CD4 immune cells + lymphocytes that respond to different coronavirus antigens. “If the body previously dealt with coronaviruses, for example, a person had seasonal colds, then he may have enough immune cells and antibodies that reacts to some parts of SARS-COV-2”, the specialist explained.

According to him, the study says about those antibodies that are similar in different viruses. At the same time, there will be no antibodies or sensitive lymphocytes to the most changeable regions – for example, the RBD, which does not similar to the previous viruses. This conclusion will help to study the virus. Experts have to prove that these parts of the immune system can effectively fight the virus. “The overall immune response may be too weak, and inadequate to neutralize SARS-COV-2,” he added.
