COVID-19 blood transfusion is called an effective treatment
Chinese scientists published a new study in which they said that transfusion of blood plasma from patients treated for coronavirus is really a good strategy in the treatment of severe forms of COVID-19.
A few weeks ago, experts doubted the effectiveness of this method, but now there is first evidence that the procedure helps.
The fact is that in the blood of people who have been ill, there must be antibodies that develop immunity to the virus. It is believed that the use of blood plasma of people who have recovered will help the diseased immune system cope with the virus faster.
Now scientists have direct evidence of this hypothesis, and the methodology has been actively introduced in the United States and Germany. Scientists note that so far this procedure is still experimental and is being tested on patients with a severe form of the virus.
We made our conclusions based on an experiment in which several dozen patients with severe COVID-19 took part. The participants were divided into two groups: the first were in Wuhan, the second in the city of Shenzhen, the scientists explained.
Participants from the first group received a plasma transfusion of people who had recovered from coronavirus, which helped to reduce the concentration of the virus in the body. Symptoms of the disease, including fever, cough, shortness of breath, and chest pain, decreased.
Another team working in Shenzhen transfused blood with antibodies from COVID-19 to five critically ill patients. In all, the indicators improved rapidly, and three participants were disconnected from the ventilator just ten days after the transfusion, since they could breathe on their own.
Despite the fact that the method turned out to be effective, scientists believe that it is unlikely to be widely used because of the difficulty in selecting donors. However, a blood transfusion is another way to help people with severe COVID-19.
